3-PC DAVAO ART COMMISSION
There was one Komiket event where I was just sitting by the booth selling art prints where one of the customers pitched me an art commission. The guy was an interior designer and he had a project in Davao that he want three art pieces by me. It was a cool idea because the guy’s project is a new condominium. And these three art pieces will be in the lobby. So I said ‘yes’. The brief aimed old Davaoeño tradition. Fortunately, the client gave me a book for reference & inspiration. I gave four solid concepts inspired from the reference book and three floating concepts.
The ones that the client wanted were MANANAHI, DABAWEÑO, and SANGKAP. DIWATA was too fantasy. DAVAO CITY GIRL was too modern. BUKO was too general. And ALAGA was… I forgot. Haha. Sorry, it’s been a long time. But I did revise it.
The client still rejected it. But, anyway, yeah. Once the three were of seven concepts were chosen and approved, I started working on them. While doing these, I still had my day job in MediaMagnet Innovation. So before & after work and during breaks, I worked on them because the deadline was tight.
I was pretty happy with this whole project. The line work represent tradition while the teal highlights represent to be relatable to modern time. Plus, it pops the each piece more.
I learned a lot from this project. What I could suggest to artists back at home: have connections with interior designers. Maybe you’ll be fortunate for them yo involve you in their projects. All for now.
